According to an article in the Weekly Mirror of November 29, 1851, Abigail Gardner was the first person interred in Old North Cemetery in 1709, but no stone exists. It started as a private cemetery for the Gardner family, but later included others.

She was probably the wife of Nathaniel and the daughter of James Coffin and Mary Severance. Her birth record shows:

Abigail Gardner, w. Nathaniel Gardner (s. Richard and Sarah), d. James and Mary (Severance), , 1666, P.R.38.
