Leonard Michael Werda, known as "Chief Engineer" Werda, 89, of W. Hueber Street, Alpena, passed away on Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at Tendercare/Alpena.
Leonard M. Werda was born on September 29, 1921 in Alpena to the late Felix Werda and Josephine (Bronikowski) Werda. On August 16, 1947 he married the former Genevieve Pazik. Mr. Werda was 17 years old when he began sailing on the Wyandotte, he later earned an engineer's license and was chief engineer for 30 years (25 on the Crapo), retiring at the age of 71. He also served in the Merchant Marines during World War II, sailing all over the world hauling war materials.
Mr. Werda was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, member over 50 years K of C and a 3rd degree, inducted into Great Lakes Maritime Hall of Fame, lifetime member of NRA, Elks Club, and Moose Lodge #571. He loved his dogs, camping and hunting, owning 4 different camps over the years.
Surviving were his wife "the apple of his eye", Genevieve Werda; 1 daughter, Diana (Patrick) Gallagher; 1 son, Leonard (Shirley) Werda; 6 grandchildren, Dawn Roznowski, Dale (Cora) Kaiser, Cory Gallagher, Ryan Gallagher, Christie (Kevin Johnson) Werda, Carrie (Corey) Standen; 5 great-grandchildren, Dan Roznowski, Logan Kaiser, Hunter Lowe, Makayla Standen, Cordel Standen; 1 daughter-in-law, Kathie Werda; and 2 sisters, Genevieve Sell and Jean Stanaback.
Preceding him in death were 2 sons, Gary Werda and Steven Werda; 4 brothers, Edward Werda, Leo "Fritz" Werda, John Werda, Norbert Werda; and 1 sister, Regina Konecki.
