Mountford started his own architecture practice in 1881. His commissions included: Battersea Public Library (1888-1890), Battersea Polytechnic (1890-91), Sheffield Town Hall (1890-1897), Battersea Town Hall (1892-93), the Northampton Institute at Clerkenwell (1893-98) and the Central Criminal Courts at the Old Bailey (1900-07). He submitted plans for the Aldwych redevelopment (1900) and was one of the eight architects selected to design the new London County Council Hall (1908).
