| Birth: | Jan., 1467 Greater London, England | | Death: | Sep. 10, 1519 Greater London, England | Theologian. The son of Sir Henry Collet, who twice served as Lord Mayor of London, he graduated from Magdalen College, Oxford, and became a priest in 1498. From 1504 until his death he was Dean of Saint Paul's Cathedral in London, and with a large inheritence from his father he founded St. Paul's School (1510). He also served as private chaplain to Henry VIII, even though he opposed the king's war with France. A noted Christian humanist, Colet was closely associated with Erasmus and Thomas More. He advocated religious reform but was deeply opposed to any break from Roman Catholic Church. (bio by: wildgoose) Family links: Parents: Henry Collet (____ - 1510)
