Grandpa Jay was a farmer, but he was also a cattle buyer. He bought the first Ford car sold in Allen Nebraska for $500.00. There was no sales tax, car license, or drivers license's at that time. He bought his gas from the livery stable. He would drive grandma to O'Neill and at that time there was not much other than cattle trails for roads. Grandpa would drive that car as fast as it would go, and when he had to stop, he just slammed on the brakes and hollered "Whoa!" Grandma said they went like the wind,(probably about 25 miles per hour) Grandpa's marriage to Grandma was a very happy one, in spite of the difference in ages.(he 39 and she 16) The only time they were ever seen in an argument was when their son, John got into some mischief, like driving the car without permission. When Grandpa left home he always wanted Grandma to fix him food to take with him, she says he didn't like to eat away from home, and loved her cooking. Grandma made everything from scratch, including pumpkin pies. She made them by the dozen; Grandpa and Willard Munson used to eat a couple of pies at a setting.
Owen Triggs used to turn his pigs into Grandpas fields. One day he was so mad, he went up on the hill with a loaded gun and waited. He was going to shot Owen, but Owen didn't show up that day. While living in the town of Allen, and during a blizzard, Grandpa went out with the hired man to take a load of hay to the cattle. The hired man turned the hay rack too short and it upset. Grandpa fell out, hitting his head on a frozen clod of earth and died Jan 6, 1918.
