Edgar Joseph Amiot, 95, of rural Red Lake Falls, Minnesota, died early Saturday morning, November 4, 2006, in the Riverview Hospital in Crookston, with many of his family at his bedside. Edgar was born in his parent's home in Gentilly Township of Polk County, near Red Lake Falls, Minnesota, on March 19, 1911. He was one of seven children born to the union of Francis and Elizabeth (Audette) Amiot. Edgar was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Gentilly, Minnesota and attended the Prairie Queen #45 country school. He later worked for his father on the family farm and helped build the barn that stood on the farmstead. On July 12, 1932 he was united in marriage to Antonia Vaudrin at St. Peter's. The couple farmed in Gentilly Township and in 1937 bought the farmstead that had belonged to Edgar's grandparents. In 1984 that farm was designated a "Century Farm" and to this day has had only two owners. In addition to growing their crops Edgar and Antonia also had a dairy cattle operation, and for years Edgar did carpentry and remodeling jobs around the area. Edgar and Antonia liked to play cards and host friends to card parties in their home. They had loved to dance throughout their married life, and especially enjoyed polkas. Edgar's enthusiasm for dancing continued until advancing age recently forced him to slow his pace. Retirement from farming came in 1973, and two years later Antonia passed away on February 22, 1975. On December 28, 1976 Edgar married Marguerite Morin King at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls. They made their home on Edgar's farm. Marguerite passed away on September 28, 1990. Edgar was a lifelong member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Gentilly, a former member of Crookston Eagles Aerie #873, and had served on the Prairie Queen #45 school board. He had been a vegetable gardener for many years and was still canning his produce to the present time. Edgar's passion was for wood-crafting. His patience was something to marvel at as he spent countless hours in his workshop making the most intricate pieces- including large collectibles, windmills, wood-charms, flower planters, and wooden puzzles. Nothing pleased him more than being able to present his labors of love to his adoring family members and seeing the delight in their eyes. He will be dearly missed by all whose lives he touched. May God bless Edgar's memory.
Family members include two daughters and sons-in-law, Dorine and Laurence Trudeau , and Mary Jean and Donovan Majeres, all of Red Lake Falls, MN; nine grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; seventeen great-great grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Viola and Elmer Ricard of Crookston, MN; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Edgar also leaves six step-children, Nancy Zaretzky of FL, Jerry (Julie) King and Scott (Shirley) King of Minneapolis, MN, Tom (Carol) King of Warroad, MN, Bonnie (Ryan) Olson and Mary Jo (Terry) Schmitz of Red Lake Falls, MN; twenty step-grandchildren; and numerous step great-grandchildren. Besides his wives, Antonia and Marguerite, Edgar was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Elizabeth; four brothers, Bill, Omer, David, and Fred Amiot; and a sister, Leah Normandin.
