According to information handed down through the family, William Smith was born on 15 August 1830 in Muskingum County, Ohio. His son, William Alonzo Smith, purchased a new tombstone in 1941 for his parents. Apparently, a mistake was made in the year of birth for William on the tombstone. William's older sister, Mary Ann Smith Riley, was born on 1 February 1829 (It's highly unlikely that two children, not twins, would be born in the same year). According to William's obituary, he was 72 years, 5 months and 1 day old at the time of his death. William Smith died on 17 January 1903 in Aboite Township, Allen County, Indiana.
