Marie M. Patterson, 89, United Helpers Adult Home, formerly of 201 Albany Ave., died Sunday at Hepburn Medical Center.

Mrs. Patterson taught school in Hammond for several years before her marriage and returned to the classroom after the birth of her children. She returned to the school in Hammond and later taught at Inlet, Carthage, Massena, Lisbon, Whitesboro, Malone and Hounsfield Central School, Sackets Harbor. She retired in 1975, completing a teaching career that spanned 33 years.

Born Oct. 21, 1907, in Ogdensburg, daughter of Louis and Mary Ward Benoit LaVenture, she attended local schools, graduating from Ogdensburg Free Academy in 1925, the Ogdensburg Teachers Training Program in 1926 and Potsdam Normal School in 1929 with lifetime teaching certification.

She married Wilbert J. Patterson on Oct. 28, 1935. They celebrated their 50th anniversary and renewed their vows in 1985 in St. Mary's Cathedral, with the Msgr. John N. Waterhouse officiating. The couple lived in St. Petersburg, Fla., Westport, Conn., Massena, and in Ogdensburg for more than 50 years. Mr. Patterson died Oct. 26, 1993.

Mrs. Patterson was a member of New York State Retired Teachers Association and a communicant of St. Mary's Cathedral.

Survivors include three sons, a daughter, nine grandchildren;seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

An infant daughter, Faith Marie, died in 1942. Six brothers also died before her, David, Theodore, Joseph, Allen and two in infancy, as did three sisters, Mrs. Rod (Eva) Doe, Mrs. Hugh (Josephine) Murphy and Mrs. Michael (Mary Adelaide) Sherry.

A funeral Mass will be said at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Cathedral with her son, the Rev Terrence R. Patterson , officiating. Burial will be in Foxwood Memorial Park.
