He served as a lieutenant colonel in the United States Army's medical corp during World War I. During this time his toes were frozen and had to be amputated. After the war, he started his own pathology practice in New York City, which operated for many years. He married first to Edith M. Joy on 10 June 1902. After her death, he married Lilian Hendrison Boult on 14 June 1929. He had no children by either wife.
