New Brunswick-born lawyer, was first prime minister elected representing the west. Served in the House of Commons (1911-1937). Minister of Justice (1920-21), Minister of Mines (1926). Leader of the Conservative Party (1927-1937). Became prime minister just as the Great Depression was setting in. Virtually every measure he tried failed. Dissillusioned, he left Canada and never returned. Retired in England, he was created Viscount Bennett of Mickelham, Hopewell and Calgary, with a seat in the House of Lords (1941-1947).
