He served in the House of Commons from 1896 to 1920, and led the Conservative Party from 1901 to 1920. A teacher and lawyer, he was Prime Minister during the World War I period, asserting Canada's autonomy within the British Empire. Led a Unionist coalition government from 1917. Attended the Paris Peace Talks and signed the Versailles Treaty on Canada's behalf (the first time Britain had not signed for Canada).
