During his eleven year career in the major leagues he played for five teams. He played outfield and third base for the Chicago White Sox (1934), Brooklyn Dodgers (1935 to 1936 and 1942 to 1945), St. Louis Cardinals (1937 to 1938), Cincinnati Reds (1939), and New York Yankees (1941). He had a career batting average of .283 and drove in 270 runs. He played in two World Series in 1939 and 1941. He wore a mustache which was almost unheard of during his era of play.
