John Baptist Mitchell was born 21 Sep 1847, and died 23 Oct 1913. He was the son of Stephen Mitchell III and Caroline McLeod Mitchell. He married Mary Adell Dennard 28 Jul 1868, daughter of John Dennard and Martha Denson Dennard. She was born 10 Jan 1846, and died 21 Apr 1927. They are buried in the Cedar Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Wilcox County, GA. His grave is marked by a huge Georgia marble monument to CSA soldiers.

Shortly before the War Between the States, John Baptist Mitchell was to take over as head of the Mitchell household. His father died while he was quite young and to him fell the responsibility of playing the roll of brother and father to his younger brothers and sisters.

Very soon John Baptist was to answer the roll call of arms in defense of his beloved Southland and went to the front of battle as a brave volunteer of the Confederate Army, a member of Company G, 5th Ga. Reserve, He was commissioned a major in the 169th Div. on the 24th day of Feb. 1862.

On 29 Jul 1868, John Baptist married Miss Mary Dennard (known to her family and friends as "Polly"). After their marriage they made their home in Pineview, where they lived until they died.

John Baptist Mitchell served as clerk of the Cedar Creek Baptist Ch. for about 40 years and sometimes filled the pulpit when no preacher was available.

John Baptist Mitchell had served as county commissioner for Wilcox Co. in 1890. He was instrumental in constructing the courthouse in Abbeville. A marble marker in the hall still bears his name.

To the Worshipful Master, Wardens and Brethren of Pineview Lodge No. 119 F. & AM.
We your memorial committee beg to submit the following report.

That whereas: it has pleased the Supreme Architect of the Universe to call from earthly labor to heavenly refreshment our beloved brother, John B. Mitchell, who departed this life October 23, 1913 after a long and painful illness of several months duration. Bro. Mitchell by his daily life and many virtues has been a shining example of the teaching of Masonary and by the practice of its precepts has endeared himself not only to the fraternity but the community of large, therefore we deem it fitting that a brief sketch of his life be entered upon the minutes of our lodge, and graven upon the memories that other members of our order by reading the history of his life and pondering over the excellent qualities of our deceased brother, may be inspired to follow his example, and by their daily lives illustrate the true principles of our fraternity, Friendship, Morality and Brotherly love.
Brother Mitchell was born the 21st day of September 1847, was the oldest member of a large family of children. His father died when he was quite young. He ministered to the sick and afflicted of his neighborhood and was beloved alike for his medical skill and his love and sympathy for his people. Verily, "we shall not see his like again."
He was a charter member of Pineview Lodge No 119 F. & A.M. and was a regular attendant upon its communications until he was stricken with his last ailment, His brethren expected him to be in his place when the Lodge convened, knew something wrong when he failed to appear. As an officer of the Lodge Notable Secretary, he evidenced a love for the principles of Masonry, a fidelity to the duties of his office and a broad and comprehensive grasp of the teachings of our order. He was ever ready to assist a brother in distress, to whisper words of sympathy or friendly counsel, and responsive at all times to that broad charity which distinguishes a true Mason.
He was a devoted member of the Missionary Baptist Church and was clerk of his church over forty years. Here, his Christian Virtues shone supreme, and by his daily life, he proved that the greatest man in any community is the consecrated Christian.
His daily Motto seemed to be 'Count that lost whose low descending sun."
