He was born in Cumberland County on March 31, 1933 to the late Edward Daniel Black Sr. and Mary Bethea Black. Rev. Black served 20 years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict and received a purple heart in Vietnam. He served as a pastor for Lee's Chapel Christian Church and Haywood Independent Bible Church, both located in Moncure. He was retired from GKN Automotive and served as a chaplain of the Seven Seas Club and was an avid NASCAR fan. He was a faithful member of Lemon Springs Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday School Teacher and was scheduled to be ordained as a deacon this Sunday.
Rev. Black was a loving husband, brother, father, grandfather and great grandfather and was married to Ernestine Mills Black of Sanford for 55 years. He is also survived by his son, Lloyd Carlton Black Jr. of Martinsburg, pa.; three daughters, Jan Black Smith (Leo) of Sanford, Louise Black Thomas (Stevie) of Broadway and Melanie Black Johnson (Jeff) of Cameron; brothers, Edward D. Black Jr. of Spring Lake and Leroy Black of Raeford; a sister, Joyce Black Ballard of Coats; ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, June 2, 2009, at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at Lemon Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Whitehead and the Rev. Glenn Hancock presiding. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
