Colonel, Corp of Engineers. United States Army

Class of 1832, United States Military Academy.

He conducted the first scientific expedition across Arizona in September 1851 to explore and map the Zuni and Colorado Rivers and evaluate their navigability. He served in the Mexican War and was cited for gallantry at the Battle of Buena Vista.

The Sitgreaves National Forest is named after him. He was the son of Samuel Sitgreaves.
