Joyce was born in Frankfurt, Michigan, the daughter of Joanne and Cecil Douglas. She attended Shelby High School, and in 1990, she married Mark Anthony Coulier. Together they had four children. But they had a troubled marriage due to struggles with domestic violence and drug addiction with legal consequences which led to her children being removed from custody. Formerly a resident of Scottville, she had lived in Montague for some time before moving to Hart, Michigan, where she had two sisters living in the Hart area. Though she was estranged from her husband, she still loved him, and on her 30th birthday, they went out with another couple. Their car broke down on Monroe Road near Pentwater, and they were given a ride back to their apartment in the city of Hart by passing motorists. It was the last time she was seen alive. On August 28, 2000, her brother-in-law, Nelson Ollis, went looking for a shovel that was taken from the rear of his apartment a month before, and found it near her partially buried body in a wooded lot about 50 yards away. Her death was ruled a homicide following an autopsy. After nine years, investigators brought murder charges against her husband, Mark Coulier, who was then living in Hesperia. He was found not guilty. Joyce was described by friends as a good person who was trying to change her life around at the time she was murdered.
