Robert L. Montgomery, 68, of 5475 Route 37, died Sunday morning in the emergency room at Hepburn Medical Center after being stricken at his home. He had been hospitalized from Aug. 4 until Friday and had suffered from diabetes for 61 years.
Mr. Montgomery and his brother established and operated Montgomery Home Improvement, later known as Montgomery Bros. Home Improvement, for seven years. In 1963, Mr. Montgomery purchased a Culligan Water Conditioning franchise, which he had operated with his family for the past 35 years. He was also the proprietor of Mallview Apartments.
Born Oct. 13, 1928, in Ogdensburg, son of David Gordon and Mary McGahey Montgomery, he attended St. Mary's Academy and schools in Philadelphia.
He married Helen Burley on April 15, 1952, in St. Mary's Church chapel with Monsignor Louis D. Berube officiating. After their marriage, the couple lived in Syracuse for two years before returning to Ogdensburg. They had lived at their present home on Riverside Drive (Route 37) since 1954.
Mr. Montgomery was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral parish, a life member of Ogdensburg Elks Lodge 772 and past president of the Ogdensburg Minor Hockey Association. He enjoyed golf, bowling, horseback riding and polo and playing cards.
Surviving besides his wife are two sons, a sister, a brother, six grandchildren, a great-grandchild and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A prayer service will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Fox Funeral Home, followed by a 10 a.m. funeral Mass at St. Mary's Cathedral. Burial will be in Foxwood Memorial Park.
