James Tallmadge
Birth: Jan. 28, 1778
Death: Sep. 29, 1853

US Congressman, Educator. Served in the United States Army during the War of 1812, and was part of the defence garrison of New York City. Elected to represent New York's 4th District to fill the vacancy in the United States House of Representatives caused by the death of Congressman Henry B. Lee, serving from 1817 to 1819. During his tenure he signifacantly contributed legislation that prohibiting further introduction of slaves into the state of Missouri. He declined to run for re-election, and served in the New York State Assembly after his Congressional term was complete. He then served as Lieutenant Governor of New York from 1824 to 1826 before founding New York University. He served as its president from 1830 to 1846. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
