He married (1) on February 9, 1873 in Calhoun County, Alabama to Margaret Stockton, daughter of Davis and Sarah Malinda (Callahan) Stockton; they had 3 children: Emma Cornelia, Columbus Arthur, and Martha. Margaret died and Gus married (2) to Emma Owens on January 24, 1877 in Calhoun County, Alabama; they had two children: Lavonia and Kesha. Gus married (3) on March 18, 1882 to Sarah Caroline Dobbs, daughter of David and Mary Todd Dobbs; they had 6 children: Mary Susan, John Clement, Sarah Melissa, Henry Frank, Julie Bell, and a set of twins. Gus married (4) on September 5, 1889 to Mary Jane Rooks Bishop; they had 5 children: James Ollie, Minnie Leonie, Eulah Caldonia, Silas Adkin, and Paul Allen.
