The son of Nathaniel & Susannah (Wilterton) Merrrill, he married Sarah Watson on September 23, 1663 in Hartford. As a young man, he removed from Newbury with Gregory Wilterton, his uncle, to Hartford. Mr. Wilterton left a lot of his estate to John.
From Peggy Mnich: Nathaniel and Susanna [surname unknown] were married in England. Their first four children were born and baptized in England. John Merrill (born 1635) is one of them. He was not born in Massachusetts. The family didn't arrive America until after 1639. The first sign that Nathaniel Merrill lived in Newbury, MA, was when his son, Daniel, was born in 1642. In 1654, Nathaniel died. Susanna then married Stephen Jordan who came from England in about 1633. He died in 1690, and she in 1702. They had no children together, although Stephen had two daughters from a previous marriage.
Susanna's mother was married to a Wilterton/Wolteron in England. With Mr. Wilterton/Wolterton being her stepfather, she might have used his surname, but there's no proof.
It is also rumored that Susanna might have been married to Gregory Wilterton/Wolterton, but then he could have been her brother, as well. Again, there's no proof.
With conflicting information and no solid facts, I wouldn't recommend using Wilterton/Wolterton in your tree. I left Susanna's surname blank in mine.
Now, for John Merrill, he was living in Hartford, CT, in 1657. He might have lived there prior to that. According to the records, he was adopted by Gregory Walterton (the same Gregory above???), who was working as a tanner. John learned a tanner's trade from him. When Gregory died, he left a lot for John who was named as one of the sons.
On September 23, 1663, John married Sarah Watson. In 1683 John sold his land and moved to West Hartford where he lived until his death in 1712.
