John was the youngest son of Michel W. Sr and Ann Shepherd Whitmore. His siblings were Elizabeth Whitmore, Margaret Whitmore Beveridge Dulin, Catherine Whitmore Harrison(c1815-1895), and Michael W. Whitmore Jr (c1818-b1860).
He married Elizabeth Ann Adams 25 Feb 1850 in Loudoun County, Virginia. They had seven children.

Mr. John H. Whitmore died at his home, near Leesburg of heart disease yesterday morning, aged eighty years. He was a successful farmer and widely known. He was an uncle of the late M.W. Beveridge, and father of Mr. Lee Whitmore, both of Washington, D.C.
