Merlyn Nelson Trued was the son of Herman S. and Hulda (Nelson) Trued.

As a 1st Lt. Marine Air Corps in 1944 (WWII), he married Josephine Elizabeth Schaffer. She supported his education through graduate school, and through his long career as an international economist which included his being appointed Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Treasury by President Kennedy.

They had two children, Micheal Trued (Alice) and Sally Trued (Nicholas Shorter).
