Francis G. Mason, 88, of 530 Hayward St., died at 7:25 a.m. Friday at his home.
Prayer services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Fox Funeral Home, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Cathedral with the Rev. John Silver officiating. Entombment will be in Foxwood Memorial Park.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Marie; a son, two daughters, five grandchildren and a great-grandson.
Born May 18, 1905, in Ogdensburg, son of J. George and Kathryn O'Connell Mason, he graduated from Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse in 1923 and received a bachelor's degree from Niagara University in 1928. He received a master's degree in education from St. Lawrence University, Canton.
He married Mary Marie Erwin on November 4, 1944 at Wichita Falls, TX.
Mr. Mason entered the Army in 1942, serving in the field artillery in the Pacific theater of operations. He retired in 1965 after 19 years as commanding officer of the 314th military police battalion of the Army reserves. He was a lieutenant colonel.
Mr. Mason was the senior employment interviewer at the New York State Employment office in Ogdensburg from 1946 to 1966 and worked for New York State Rehabilitation from 1966 to 1972.
He was a baseball and basketball sportscaster for WSLB from 1946 to 1960 and was a basketball referee for the Northern League and St. Lawrence University in Canton and Clarkson University, Potsdam.
Mr. Mason was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2936, American Legion Post 69 and the Reserve Officer Association. He was also a communicant of St. Mary's Cathedral.
