Army officer. He graduated from Montpelier High School in 1945, joined the Army, served two years in Germany during the post World War II occupation, and joined the Army Reserve after his 1947 discharge. He graduated from the University of Vermont in 1951 and in 1953 he received a commission in the Vermont Army National Guard. He became a member of the Vermont National Guard's full time workforce and served in a variety of command and staff assignments, culminating with promotion to Colonel and assignment as the Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations and Training, G-3. After his 1982 retirement he was appointed Brigadier General and commander of the Vermont State Guard, the state's volunteer military internal security and and emergency response organization, which he led for 18 years. In 1991 he was promoted to Major General in the Vermont State Guard, and he retired in 2000.
