Theatre Impresario. Keith was a vaudeville theatre owner and is credited with with the evolution of variety theatre into vaudeville. He started his career working at a museum and later joined P.T. Barnum's circus and in 1885 co-founded the Boston Bijou Theatre. In 1896 Keith and his partner Edward Albee opened the Union Square Theatre in New York and here the first exhibition of the Lumiere Cinematographre appeared. They went on to open theatres in Boston and Phildelphia before signing with Biograph Pictures and then went to Edison Studios and suppliers of motion pictures. Following Keith's death, in 1928 the Keith Albee Company merged with the Orpheum circuit and shortly after RKO Pictures studio was born. Keith died at the Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach. (bio by: TLS)
