Born Ephraim Katchalsky, he immigrated to Palestine in 1922 and became one of the first scientists to join the Weitzman Institute of Science. In 1973, as a Labour Party candidate, he was elected the fourth President of Israel, serving until 1978, when he retired and returned to academic life.
