James Shain was the son of silk weaver Edward Shain and his wife Mary, who were originally from Ireland. He was born February 15, 1875 in Virginia. The family was living in Ohio County, Kentucky by 1800 where James and Theodocia Compton, the daughter of Augustus Compton and Ann Peyton or Payton, were married on January 9, 1809. Their land fell into the newly-created Grayson County at the time of the 1810 census. Traditionally father Edward died in Grayson County about 1814 and mother Mary died there about 1819.

James and Theodocia (Compton) Shain were the parents of the following children. Susannah was born in Ohio County and the others were born in Grayson County.

James Shain died on September 14, 1832 in Grayson County, Kentucky. He was buried in the Old Shain Cemetery near Pine Knob, Grayson County, Kentucky. Traditionally his widow Theodocia Compton Shain was buried beside him about 1846.
