William served as a Private, 4th Delaware Regiment, Company G. during the Civil War.

He was wounded in the left thigh at the Battle of Five Forks on April 1, 1865 and was admitted to the armory hospital in Washington D.C on April 8, 1865.

William "Died Of Wounds" at the hospital during the war.
