John graduated from West Point Military Academy in 1856. His first action was with the Seminole Indian skirmished in 1856-57. During the Civil War he was at the battles of Valverde and Apache Canon. In August of 1862 he was appointed Colonel of the First Regiment Cavalry of Missiouri by the Governor. In December of 1864, he resigned and returned to the regular army where he was a Captain and was stationed at David's Island, New York with the 33rd U.S. Infantry. --- Per Neil Scheidt: He was buried with title of Colonel, and his pall bearers were George F Miller; Frederick heller; James Brown; William Arnold; John McKnight; Jacob C Hoff, Esquires.
