Son of John and Eva Neilan of Ballygalda, Co. Roscommon.

One of seven children, and the second oldest, Gerald Aloysius Neilan was born in 1881.

His brother Leo died young.

Dr John Alexander Neilan (1877-1947), who set up a medical practice in Seaham, County Durham with their cousin Dr Luke Dillon, and who later served as a Major in the Home Guard during WWII.

Dr Charles James Neilan (1886-1952), who served as a Lieutenant in the Royal Army Medical Corps during WWI, and later joined his elder brother's medical practice in Seaham.

Dr Alan Joseph Neilan (1888-1959), who also joined the RAMC and reached the rank of Captain.

Arthur Neilan, who took part in the Easter Rising with the Irish Volunteers and was subsequently sent to Knutsford Detention Barracks on 1st May 1916. Buried in the same grave.

Gerald Aloysius Neilan was educated at the Jesuits' Clongowes School (Clongowes Wood College), in Clane, Co. Kildare. He joined the Sherwood Foresters, and served with this regiment in South Africa and China. In December 1914 he enlisted in the Northumberland Fusiliers, and then transferred to the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. He was a resident of 4 Mount Harold Terrace, Harold's Cross, Dublin.

While serving as a Lieutenant in the 10th Battalion, Royal Dublin Fusiliers, he was killed at age 34 at the Mendicity Institution, Dublin on the first day of the Easter Rising.
