MRS. UMBENHOWER SERVICES HELD THIS MORNING
Funeral rites for Mrs. W. A. Umbenhower, who died at her home in Chariton on Monday, after an extended illness, were held at the family residence, 715 Orchard avenue, this forenoon at ten o'clock, conducted by Rev. F. W. Simpson of the Methodist church, and this afternoon at one o'clock, also conducted by Rev. Simpson, at the Coal Glen church in Pleasant township, and burial took place in the Coal Glen cemetery.
Sarepta Jane Umbenhower, daughter of Abraham and Mary Ladd Umbenhower, was born in Mahaska county, Iowa, on August 30, 1867, and passed away December 10, 1934, at the age of 67 years, 3 months and 10 days. When but a small child, she moved with her parents to Lucas county and her home had since been in this vicinity.
On Sept. 20, 1883, she was united in marriage in Pleasant township to William A. Umbenhower. To this union ten children were born, namely, Mrs. Mary Martz, of Ottumwa; Mrs. Della Ritchey, Mrs. Etta Duckworth and Mrs. Lesta McDonald of Pleasant township; Mrs. Grace Scott, of Millerton; Geo. Umbenhower, of Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. Inez Shaffer, Mrs. Fern Gerhart, Mrs. Minnie Duckworth and Mrs. Emma Dunning, all of Des Moines.
Mr. and Mrs. Umbenhower lived on a farm in Pleasant township after their marriage until about 15 years ago when they moved to Chariton and this place had since been their home.
When a young girl deceased had united with the Coal Glen M. E. church, and was always a devout and faithful Christian worker. She was a devoted wife and mother, a kind neighbor and friend, and will be greatly missed in the home and community.
Mrs. Umbenhower is survived by her husband, ten children, twenty-two grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, also by three brothers and two sisters, Otis Umbenhower, of Chariton, Edgar and Johnnie Umbenhower, of Pleasant township, Mrs. Susan Holliday and Mrs. Edna Zinn, of Chariton.
