WILLIAM A. UMBENHOWER

Mr. William Andrew Umbenhower died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Morris Scott, of Millerton, after a long illness. He was the son of Isaiah and Matilda Hayes Umbenhower, and was born in Champaign county, Illinois, on February 17, 1858, and passed away July 9, 1947, at the age of 89 years, four months and 22 days.

When a small child he moved with his parents by covered wagon to Iowa. His mother took ill on the way and passed away in Henry county and was buried there. His father, with four small boys and one daughter, came on to Marion county, near Marysville, where he grew to manhood.

On September 20, 1883, he was married to Sarepta Jane Umbenhower. To this union were born nine daughters and one son. Mr. and Mrs. Umbenhower lived on a farm in Pleasant township after marriage and he was a faithful member of the Coal Glen church and contributed to the church support until his death. He was also a member of the Methodist church of Chariton.

They moved to Chariton in 1919, where his wife passed away in December, 1934. In 1935 he went to live with his daughter, Grace, at Millerton. Mr. Umbenhower, or Will, as he was best known, will be greatly missed by his friends and family.

He leaves to mourn his passing, one son and seven daughters; Mr. George Umbenhower, of Melrose; Mrs. Mary Martz, of Ottumwa; Mrs. Della Rithchey, of Melrose; Mrs. Etta Duckworth, of Pleasant township; Mrs. Grace Scott, of Millerton; Mrs. Lesta McDonald, of Chariton; Mrs. Minnie Duckworth and Mrs. Fern Gerhart, both of Des Moines.

He also leaves 22 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He was the last of five children.

Two daughters, Mrs. Inez Shaffer and Mrs. Emma Dunning, preceded him in death.

Funeral services, under the direction of Miley funeral home, were held July 11, at 2:30 p.m. at the Coal Glen church. The Rev. W. A. Samp, of Chariton, pastor of the Methodist church, officiated. Burial was made in the Coal Glen cemetery.
