CHATHAM - Lela C. (Webster) Allen, 99, died Wednesday, May 16 at Liberty Commons Rehabilitation and Skilled Care Center in North Chatham.
She was the wife of the late Robert L. Allen.
Mrs. Allen was born in Somerville, and spent several of her early years in her mother's native Nova Scotia. She later returned to the Boston area where she graduated from Hyde Park High School. In 1922 she completed studies at Bridgewater Normal School and taught in Falmouth until her marriage in 1924.
In 1925 Mrs. Allen began hosting a tearoom from her home, which was located at the site of today's Monomoy Theater in Chatham. In 1930 she moved the tearoom to the Mill Pond, expanding it to a full-service restaurant called The Shanty.
In 1935 Mrs. Allen and her family moved to South Chatham, where she lived the rest of her life.
After several years of operating The Shanty, Mrs. Allen, left the restaurant business and became a substitute teacher in Chatham. For 15 years she and her husband wintered in Florida.
A member of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, Mrs. Allen enjoyed playing bridge, braiding rugs, gardening and knitting.
