Solomon served in Company A 5th Minnesota Infantry during the Civil War.

Mustered in March 24, 1862 from Goodhue county age 31. Discharged for disability January 13, 1863. Corporal.

—This community was startled
last Friday afternoon to learn of the
sudden death of one of its oldest and
most prominent citizens, Solomon
N. Dartt. He has been in poor
health for a couple of years past,
but was in town and walked out to
his farm home, a mile northeast of
the village Thursday evening, and
tired for the night feeling ordinarily
well. About 4 o'clock the next
morning he was taken with great
pain, the cause being inflamation of
the bladder. Dr. Van Cleve was summoned
and all that medical skill
could devise was done to relieve him,
but he died about noon. The funeral
was held on Sunday afternoon at
2 o'clock at Court House Hall, Rey.

The Hall was crowded to its utmost
capacity, and many were unable
to gain entrance. The exercises
were under the auspices pf Mantor
ville Lodge No. 62., A. O..U. W., of
which deceased was a charter mem
ber. Including members of other
lodges present, there were about 150
Workmen in line, while 76 vehicles
helped to make one of the largest
funeral processions ever seen here next,
perhaps, to that of his brother,
Dr. Dart, several years ago. From
the biography in the History of
Dodge County, we collate the following:
Solomon N. Dartt was born in
Windsor county, Vt.. Dec. 26, 1831.
He attended school in his native
town and finished his education at
the Perkinsville Academy. In 1850,
he went to Boston and served as
gardener for two years for a wealthy
gentleman, and then returned to
Vermont. In the spring of 1855 he
started "for Minnesota, arriving in
Mantorville Apr. 15 of that year.
He settled on sec. 15 near this vil
lage, being one of a very few of our
old settlers who have continued to
reside upon their original homesteads
through nearly forty years. Jan. 4,
"1862 he enlisted in Co. C., Fifth Reg't
Minn. Vol. Infantry, was elected
corporal, served in the battles of Iuka
and Corinth and was discharged
for disability Jan. 13,1863. He had
served nine years as member of the
board of education, had been town
supervisor, and was prominent both
in the order of A. 0. U. W. and A.
& A. M. He is survived by his wife,
two sons and a daughter, all at
home, and a sister, Mrs. L. S. Rossiter
of Kasson.
