Rudy was born to William and Anna (Dyck) Claassen. His family moved to Washington in 1929, where they farmed in the Onecho and Colfax areas.
Rudy graduated from Colfax High School and began farming as a young man. He married Othielia Franz in Ritzville September 4, 1940. They made their home on a farm near Clarkston and their two children, Darrel and Julie, were born there.
In 1950 they bought the Broyles place six miles south of Dusty. They operated the farm there until retiring in 1978.
This same year Rudy and Othielia began spending winters in Arizona. He and his wife loved to travel and visit family and friends. He had a passion for his God, his church, his family and farming.
Rudy was active in the Onecho Bible Church and served on various church boards and many of their travels included trips to see missionaries serving abroad. He was also a long time board member of the State Farm Bureau and a member of the State Child Evangelism Fellowship board.
His wife, Othielia, died in 1996.
In 1998 he married Jean Van Proyen of Tempe, Arizona. They lived in Mesa in a retirement community at the time of his death.
His children and grandchildren remember him for his humor and his love for them, and for his faithful Christian witness.
In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ernie (bio by: Kerry Rae Smith Moser)
