Hernandez, Mr. Antonio A. "Tony" Saginaw, Michigan Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away at home Tuesday, March 31, 2009 surrounded by his family. Age 82 years. Tony was born March 22, 1927 in San Antonio, Texas to William and Elvira (Almaraz) Hernandez, both of whom preceded him in passing to the next life. As a boy, Tony moved with his parents to Chesaning, Michigan, where he later met his loving wife Iola (Coon) who survives him. Also surviving Tony are his children, Paul (Anne Turner) Hernandez and Gloria Gonzalez; grandchildren: Aaron Gonzalez, Brian (Akemi) Gonzalez, Christopher Gonzalez, Lisa (Ben) Huguenin, and Anita (Nathan) Johnson; great grandchildren: Maya Gonzalez, Blake Huguenin, and Daniel Huguenin; his sisters: Elvira Berlanga, Ora Rutherford, and Mary Ann Alvarado; and his grandson's caregiver, close friend and extended family member Mathew Miller. Tony was preceded in death by brothers: William Jr., Rudolfo "Rudy", Eduardo and Homer "Mike"; and sisters, Victoria and Hortencia. Tony interrupted his senior year of high school to serve his country in WWII. He joined the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific Fleet. When the war ended he returned to Chesaning to finish high school, where he met Iola, the love of his life. They married September 10, 1949 and remained inseparable for the next 59 years and 7 months. They settled in Saginaw. Tony retired as a salaried laboratory technician from the GM Malleable Iron Plant in 1982 after nearly 39 years of service. Tony was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, James Township Volunteer Fire Department, a Cub Scout Leader, a Boy Scout Leader and a Habitat for Humanity volunteer. He was a skilled carpenter and loved to garden. Tony was well known to the neighborhood children who regularly came to him to pump their bicycle tires and make repairs. He never turned away anyone in need. He was a gentle and quiet man, never telling others how to live or what they should do, he simply taught by example and was always there to provide support and unconditional love. Tony was loved by all who knew him and his legacy will live on through those he influenced. Funeral service will take place 11:00 a.m. Saturday at First Church of the Nazarene, 3000 Davenport Ave. with Rev. Ron Compton and Rev. John Poling officiating.
