Virgil B. Haug, 83, Axtell, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at a Seneca hospital.
He was born Aug. 5, 1919, near Baileyville, to Fred and Emma Runnebaum Haug. He attended rural grade schools and graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic School in Baileyville. He was a farmer for many years and had received two Marshall County conservation awards.
He served in the Army during World War II and had received three Purple Hearts and other medals.
He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Axtell and had served on several church committees. He was a member of Hendricks Post No. 214 of the American Legion in Axtell and a former member of the boards of directors of Axtell Hospital, Black Vermillion Watershed District and Rural Electric Cooperative.
He married Viola Broxterman on April 14, 1947. They lived near Baileyville for four years and in the Axtell community since. She survives. A daughter, Mary Ellen Haug, died in 1962. A son, Terry Haug, died in 1988.
Other survivors include a son, Arlie Haug, Axtell; two daughters, Carol Birkel, Kansas City, Mo., and Connie Haug, Omaha, Neb.; two brothers, Vernice Haug, Baileyville, and Gilbert Haug, Manhattan; a sister, Hope James, Kansas City, Mo.; and several grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Axtell. Hendricks Post No. 214 of the American Legion will conduct graveside services at St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery north of Axtell.
