Roy Edwin Riley was born October 10, 1880 in Redmond, Macon, Missouri. He was the son of George William Riley and Mariah Elizabeth Gillespie.

In 1900 he was a Corporal Redman in Ubay Bohal, Philippine Islands, Military and Naval Forces.

On August 6, 1907 he married Mayme Alice Clark in St Joseph, Buchanan, Missouri.

A year after the first child was born the family moved to Richland, Montana where Roy worked farming and operating the Riley Ferry. He and Mayme had three more children.

In the late 1920s his family moved to Los Angeles, California. He spent the remainder of his life living in Santa Monica. Roy Edwin Riley died on September 15, 1939.
