Mavis was the second child of John Harold Painter and Frances Bockenkamp Gleason. As an Army brat, her early childhood was spent in various states and countries.

She graduated high school in Maryland and immediately moved to Texas where her oldest sister was living. She got her first job with telephone company and spent the next twenty-five years climbing the ranks. During this time, she moved to the Seattle area (where her parents had met) and elected to grow roots and settle there.

Released from Ma Bell during an acquisition, she worked with a security office and then with several area doctors.

On her birthday in 2006, she became concerned with blurry vision. Within a very short time, God called her home; her fight with cancer ending. She joined her parents, one brother, one sister and one nephew.

Her smile still lights up the world where her five sisters, a half brother, four brothers-in-law, three nephews, three nieces and a grand-nephew reside.
