MUENSTER — Mass of Christian Burial for Denis Gilbert Walterscheid, age 81, of Muenster is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, May 21, 2009 at Sacred Heart Church in Muenster.
Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Fr. Ken Robinson and nephew Fr. Kyle Walterscheid will officiate. Services are directed by McCoy Funeral Home of Muenster.
Denis died at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 18, 2009 at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth.
Born January 30, 1928 in Muenster, the eldest son of Adolph Frank and Marie Catherine Schoech Walterscheid, Denis grew up on the family farm near Muenster. He attended Sacred Heart School while working with his family on the farm. He married Della Rose Herr on April 15, 1952 in Sacred Heart Church. They lived for a short while in Muenster, then moved to the "old home place" where he continued working with his dad. He later began working in the welding business with his brother, Julian, until 1971 when he began his construction business. After 20 years, he returned to full time farming and cattle raising for the remainder of his life.
Denis and Della have been lifetime members of Sacred Heart Church and very active in church activities. He was a long time member of the Sacred Heart School Board and had been secretary for St. Joseph's Society for more than 20 years, while Della was president of St. Anne's Society for about 15 years. Denis also served on the Fort Worth Diocesan School Board for at least 10 years.
Denis is survived by his wife, Della Walterscheid of Muenster; daughters and sons-in-law, Darlene and Bill Bartush of Milwaukee, Wis., Denise and Fred Fuhrmann of Tyler and Debby and Jack Schoppa of Saint Jo; sons and daughters-in-law, Phil Walterscheid of Muenster, Ted and Carrie Walterscheid of Paradise, Bret and Kimberly Walterscheid of Muenster; 18 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brothers, Julian and wife Carrie Walterscheid of Muenster and Sylvan and wife Theresa Mae Walterscheid of Muenster.
Preceded in death by son, Kenneth Walterscheid and parents, Adolph and Marie Walterscheid.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Dustin Walterscheid, Josh Walterscheid, Jeffrey Walterscheid, Toby Rice, Scott Fuhrmann, Greg Fuhrmann and Brad Fuhrmann.
A Rosary/Vigil service is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at Sacred Heart Church.
Family requests that memorials be made to The Sacred Heart Trust Fund or The Sister Roberta Hesse African Mission Fund.
