Flag Designer. Educated in the field of fine arts, he worked as a graphic artist in the advertising business in New York City. In 1971 he was chosen by Annin and Company, the largest flag manufacturer in the United States, to create and design a flag recognizing the United States service members missing in action for the National League of Families of American Prisoners and Missing in Southeast Asia. Newt's design used black-and-white images including the silhouette of a man in profile with his head bowed in the foreground with a guard tower and barbed wire behind him. He used the image of his son Jeffrey, a member of the United States Marine Corps, for the man. Over the image are the white letters POW and MIA and a white 5-pointed star; below the image is a black and white wreath above the white motto: "You are not Forgotten." The flag is the most widely known symbol for POW/MIAs from all American Wars. (bio by: sue)
