Samuel Matkin was born August 19,1850 at West Leigh,Lancashire, England. The son of Thomas and Esther Broadhurst Matkin. His father died when Samuel was two years old. Soon after Thomas died Esther joined the LDS Church. In 1853 they sailed for America on the "Ellen Maria". They traveled to Utah in the Cyrus Wheelcock wagon train. Samuel married Sarah Wilkes on Jan. 25,1869, they had nine children. He married Permelia Drury Dec. 14,1882, they had three children. He married Sena Anderson on Mar.25, 1887, They had six children. Because of the persecution of those practicing polygamy Samuel moved to Canada in 1887, becoming one of the first settlers of Cardston. Sena went to Canada with Samuel, Permelia and Sarah did not.
