Charles Kirby's life is somewhat obscure. The 1880 Census showed the A. Crayne family, Sarah wife aged 30, and Chas. Kirby aged 10 stepson.
The Nebraska State Historical Society stated Charles E. Kirby aged 29, a resident of Norfolk, Nebraska, enlisted in Company L of the 2nd Nebraska Infantry 12 May 1898, and was mustered out 24 October, 1898. The discharge was at Omaha, Nebraska, he gave his next of kin as Mrs. M. J. Thomas, Osceola, Nebraska, relationship not shown, and that he did not serve outside the Continental Limits of the United States, his serial number being C-2 390 217.
Charles Edward Kirby married Alice Elizabeth Dowdell around 1917 at Hastings, Nebraska. Alice was 18 years younger than Charles. The Veterans Administration indicates Charles E. Kirby married 22 August, 1927 to Elizabeth C. Strength at Council Bluffs, Iowa.
The Veterans Home at Bay Pines, Florida show he was a member of the domiciliary there when discharged 30 December, 1943. The VA states that Charles E. Kirby died 21 May, 1946 wife Elizabeth C. Kirby, buried at
Angelus Abbey Masoleum which is located at 1515 East Compton Boulevard, Compton California. The funeral was handled by Utter-McKinley Mortuaries, one at 1301 East Palmer, Compton, California. They state the funeral was ordered by Elizabeth Kirby, wife of the deceased who resided at 2764A East 57th Street, Los Angeles, California.
M.J. Thomas would be Mary Jane McCann Thomas, his grandmother. I believe Sarah Crayne (Crain) was his biolgical mother..i.e. Sarah Elizabeth Thomas
