Rudolph Henry Raabe was born in Putnam County, Ohio, on June 8, 1881, the oldest son of Christian Henry and Emma Jane (Bushey) Raabe. His parents lived west of State Route 66 on County Road N almost at the corner of Road 27. As a child, he attended the Raabe School which was just down the road from his home. The school building is still standing but the house was demolished in 2005.
Following high school, he attended Ohio Northern University, earning a BS degree in 1903. He took a job teaching in Putnam County, Ohio. On December 31, 1903, he was married to Mamie Lucille Klinger.
Following their marriage, Rudolph and Mamie lived in Fort Jennings, Putnam County, where Rudolph taught school.
He then took the job of superintendent of the Cloverdale School and he and Mamie moved to Cloverdale. In 1904 he purchased the patent medicine drug store in Cloverdale and this lead to an interest in pharmacy. He sold the store in 1909 when he decided to return to college and in 1910 and 1911 he earned pharmacy degrees from Ohio Northern University. When he took the state pharmacy test, he earned the highest grade that was given in the state that year.
Rudolph remained at ONU as a teacher. In 1917 he was appointed Dean of the College of Pharmacy. At that time, there were many students at ONU from Cuba and Rudolph went to Havana to study. He earned a doctorate in Pharmacy at the University of Havana, Cuba, in 1930.
He continued as dean until July 15, 1950, when he resigned to return to full time teaching. He retired from teaching in 1955.
He was given the title of Dean Emeritus and in 1964, was awarded an honorary degree from Ohio Northern University.
The Rudolph H. Raabe College of Pharmacy of Ohio Northern University was named after him. At the time of his retirement as Dean of the College of Pharmacy, it was said that "he had educated more Pharmacists than anyone else in Ohio."
