Zacheus grew up in a Church of the Brethren (Dunkard) family. He was the son of Daniel HENRICKS and Saloma Sara HUFFORD, and the brother of Isaac, David, Seth, Elizabeth, Isaiah, and Joshua.
When he was 21, Zacheus enlisted as a Private in Co. B, 72nd Ohio Infantry. A year later, he was discharged with chronic diarrhea which he had contracted in April 1862 at Shiloh, Tennessee. At almost 24, Zacheus enlisted a second time and served as a Sergeant in Co. K, 169th Ohio Infantry, for four months (until the expiration of his service contract).
On June 20, 1863, Zacheus married Rebecca GRANT in Sandusky County, Ohio. The marriage officiant was the Rev. Squire BEERY. In about 1865, Zacheus and his wife were living in Michigan. In 1870 and 1880, they and their children were living in Grant Township, Caldwell County, Missouri.
Zacheus supported his family by working as a carpenter. As was the custom among the Brethren, Zacheus' work as a pastor was without pay.
Zacheus and Rebecca had (at least) four children:
* Henry (1864-1940)
* Emanuel M. (1871-1958)
* Robert W. (1873-1964)
* Emma F. (1877-1903, m. ROOT).
Zacheus' wife died in January 1887 when he was 46 years old.
By July 1887, Zacheus was living in Polo, Caldwell County, Missouri, when -- as an elder in the Brethren Church -- he visited the newly formed Prairie View Church (a Brethren church congregation) in Scott County, Kansas.
In June 1900, a month short of his 60th birthday, Zacheus moved into the National Military Home for disabled veterans in Leavenworth County, Kansas. It appears that his son Robert lived in that area.
By 1908, Zacheus had moved to Gardena, Los Angeles County, California, and -- along with Emanuel Henricks (likely his son Emanuel) and Isaac Root -- Zacheus was mobilizing the nearby community of Lomita to create the church which eventually became St. Mark's Presbyterian Church in Lomita. At first, services were held in various homes. In 1909, land was donated for the town church at the corner of Woodward and Brethren Street (now 245th). Zacheus held the organizational meeting at his home on April 12, 1909, and the Certificate of Incorporation for Evangelical Union Christian Church was issued on June 30, 1909. The building was dedicated on Sunday, October 25, 1909. Zacheus had led the volunteer workers and had done much of the work himself. He served as pastor, without pay, until 1917.
By 1917 the little independent church had outgrown its quarters, and Zacheus retired to the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Sawtelle, Los Angeles County, California. Zacheus lived in the veterans home until his death.
Zacheus' family information is on page 155 of the 1909 HUFFORD FAMILY HISTORY. According to that information, Zacheus had a son William R. who was dead by 1909 and whose remains had been interred in a Michigan cemetery.
