Gladys Ann Hawkins, 78, Osawatomie, Kan., died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009, in Life Care Center of Osawatomie. She was born Aug. 13, 1930, in Russell, Kan., the youngest of the five children of Adam Schmidt and Amelia Strecker Schmidt. She grew up in Russell, attending local schools and graduating in 1948 from Russell High School. While in high school and for a time after graduating, she worked at both the Dream and Mecca theaters. Shortly after graduating, she went to work in the Home State Bank in Russell, where she remained until late 1959. On Nov. 25, 1956, she and Allen Webster Hawkins were married in Sulphur Springs, Texas. They made their home in Russell where he was news editor of the Russell Daily News. Mr. and Mrs. Hawkins moved to Osawatomie in January 1959 where he had accepted a position as managing editor of the Osawatomie Graphic. Mrs. Hawkins became the bookkeeper. A short time later, they became co- owners of the weekly newspaper. About two years later, they assumed full ownership. When they sold the paper in 1998, Mrs. Hawkins was general manager and co-owner of the Osawatomie Publishing Co. In addition, she and Eleanor Waggoner Budke were co-owners of Coach Light, a women's clothing store in Osawatomie, for several years. Mrs. Hawkins was active in many phases of civic and community activities throughout her years in Osawatomie. She was a co-director of the Osawatomie PRIDE Program for a number of years. The PRIDE Program was recognized twice at the state level during that time. She was a guardian for the International Order of Jobs Daughters for several years, a longtime member of Osawatomie Chapter No. 26, Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Osawatomie. Her interest in city government brought many improvements in Osawatomie. One of many things she accomplished was providing beautiful Christmas decorations in areas of downtown Osawatomie which had not been decorated in the past. She and her husband were also contributors to the Miami County Family YMCA and have a wing dedicated in their names. Those preceding her in death included three sisters, Katie Danielson, Dorothy Blevins and Margaret Anderson. Survivors include her husband of the home, a brother, Gerald Schmidt of Wichita, numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, at the First United Methodist Church in Osawatomie. She will lie in state after 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, at Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home with visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Pallbearers are Brett Glendening, Brad Waggoner, James Stearns, Greg Branson, Drew Wilson, and Larry Byers. Honorary pallbearers are Paul Branson, Bill Butler, and Gordon Schrader. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Russell. Memorials to the First United Methodist Church or Osawatomie Pride Program.
