JIM ALFORD, MILLING FIRM OWNER, DIES
James Burton "Jim" Alford III, a McComb businessman who was active in local youth baseball, died June 13, 1991, in St. Francis Xavier Hospital of Charleston, S.C. after a sudden illness.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Saturday in Catchings Funeral Home of McComb.... Services will be 3 p.m. Sunday in the Episcopal Church of the Mediator of McComb. Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery.
Mr. Alford, 39, was in South Carolina on business when he was stricken with an aneurysm Wednesday morning while asleep.
He was the president of Maco Milling Co. He was a member of the Mississippi Feed and Grain Association and other grain and trade organizations.
He was a communicate of the Episcopal Church of the Mediator and a graduate of McComb High School. He earned his bachelor's degree in marketing from the University of Mississippi, where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.
Mr. Alford also was a T-ball coach for 5- and 6-year-old boys in the Dixie Youth Baseball league.
"We coached together at least four years," said Steve Blue, vice president of Deposit Guaranty National Bank. "Jim was a good father to his children, Burton and Fenley, and he was also a good friend who would be there in both good times and bad times. Jim never met a stranger."
Long-time friend Don Lazarus, owner of Lazarus Automotive Warehouse of McComb, said Mr. Alford loved children.
"He was crazy about kids," he said. "He was crazy about his own, and he was always asking about others.
"He was happy and boisterous, and always had a loud, friendly greeting."
Mr. Alford was born March 28, 1952, in Pike County. He was the son of the late James Burton Alford Jr. and Barbara Neyland McDavitt of McComb, who survives him.
He is also survived by his stepfather, Jerry McDavitt of McComb; one son, John Burton Alford III; one daughter, Margaret Fenley Alford; two brothers, Dickey L. Alford of Covington, La., and David N. Alford of McComb; one sister, Cathy Alford of Jackson; one niece, Andrea Alford of Covington; four nephews, Alex Alford and Zeb Alford, both of Jackson, Leighton Alford of Covington and Clint Alford of McComb; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. W.L. Neyland of Woodville; and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. J. Burton Alford Sr. of McComb.
