Opal S. Ballard, 102, of Mattoon, died at 8:57 a.m. on Wednesday, May 6, 2009, at her residence.

Services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at Schilling Funeral Home in Mattoon, with the Rev. Terry Sapp officiating. Burial was in Dodge Grove Cemetery in Mattoon. Visitation was held from noon until time of services on Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials: Lincolnland Hospice.

Mrs. Ballard was born on Feb. 20, 1907, in Pike County, Ind., the daughter of Luther and Irene Dedman Selby. She married Harvey L. Ballard on Sept. 26, 1926; he died on Aug. 14, 1968.

She retired from CIPS in 1972, and was a member of Broadway Christian Church. She was an avid bridge player, an accomplished seamstress and cook, and enjoyed working with ceramics.

She is survived by children, Eileen Davison of Collinsville, Carolyn Hortenstine of Ramsey, and Robert Ballard and his wife Loretta of Mattoon; grandchildren, Susan and her husband Jack Pleimann of St. Louis, Kathy and her husband Rick Ivnik of Lockport, Eric Davisson and his wife Sarah of Minooka, Greg Davisson and his wife Lori of Collinsville, Marc Hortenstine and his wife Diane of Ramsey, Marcia and her husband Roger Sargent of Ramsey, Andy Hortenstine and his wife Joan of Ramsey, Jake Hortenstine and his wife Crystal of Ramsey, Angela and her husband Dennis Young of Vandalia, Matt Hortenstine and his wife Monique of Effingham, Rita and her husband Gene Reed of Casey, Ruth Johnson of Casey, Scott Ballard and his wife Kim of Charleston, and Cheryl Ballard of Wadesville, Ind; 28 great-grandchildren; and 23 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Alene Kaiser; and granddaughter, Carla Davisson.
