Born in Houston, Texas, he was an All-American running back for the USC Trojans and a first round choice when drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1977. For five seasons he played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1977-81) and the San Diego Chargers in 1982. He played in 64 games with a total of 3063 yards rushing, 97 receptions, 842 yards receiving and 19 touchdowns scored. He was the younger brother of recording artist Archie Bell.
