Sandford Daniel Powell, Sr. was Captain in 31 Miss Infantry. Records found show his Date of Enlistment was 7 Mar 1862. However, paperwork for headstone shows Date of Enlistment as 6 Apr 1862.
Headstone has his Date of Birth 25 Dec 1841. Yet, I find Census that put his Birth Year either 1832 or 1833.
He was a well respected Merchant and Pioneer of Brookhaven, MS.
He was married to a beloved and devoted wife Susan Virginia (Johnson) Powell until she passed on 30 Jan 1880.
Together they brought eleven children into the world:
1. Alice D. (Powell) Clapp-Barrington, 2. Edward J. Powell, 3. Thomas E. Powell, 4. Ada L. Powell, 5. Miss Susan "Susie" V. Powell, 6. Georgia Powell, 7. Robert Lee Powell, 8. Hugh Louis Powell, Sr., 9. Willie Powell, 10. Sanford "Sancho" Daniel Powell, Jr.,and 11. "Captain" Albert L. Powell.
Sandford then married his 2nd wife Mary Virginia (Brown)Powell on 3 Apr 1881 in Panola County, MS. Together they brought Mamie (Powell) McAlpine and Benjamin Powell into the world.
